Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation offers a customized plant health care program designed to effectively maintain the health of your trees and shrubs. Insects and mites usually attack trees that are stressed and/or in poor health, therefore, our philosophy is to keep your trees and shrubs as healthy as they can be. Some insects are beneficial and can be harmless to your plants, but certain species can cause severe damage and even cause the plants to die. That's why at Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation our technicians are International Society of Arboriculture certified arborists, and highly trained to inspect and treat your property for insects and diseases.
Our plant health care program starts with a thorough inspection of your landscape by a certified arborist. We customize all of our programs to the needs of your landscape. In keeping with our policy of maintaining an environmentally friendly and safe program, we do not blanket, or cover spray your yard. Each spray is targeted specifically for those plants where harmful insects and/or diseases have been observed, or in the case of preventive sprays, are very likely to occur. Sprays are applied in the minimal amount required to keep your landscape plants attractive and healthy.
Plant Health Care Services
Aeration
Relieves soil compaction normally resulting from construction activities, vehicles, or pedestrians. This process involves boring 1-3" holes into the soil to relieve the compaction, then backfilling the hole with organic compost to promote rooting.
Fertilizations
We offer fertilization programs. This is usually a liquid injection of slow release fertilizer into the root zones. Micronutrients (e.g. iron, manganese, etc.) can be added as needed.
Nutrient Deficiency Problems
Many trees suffer from chlorosis, which is the yellowing of leaves, due to nutrient deficiency. In central Ohio the most common nutrient deficiency problems are iron and manganese. We can evaluate the tree to determine the best treatment option
Dormant Oil Applications
This application is done late winter to control over wintering eggs and insects. This application is recommended every year to help control pests on the trees and shrubs on your property. This is an oil solution that suffocates insects by clogging breathing pores and uses no toxic pesticides.
Fungicide Applications
These are usually applied through the months of April to June for scab disease on susceptible crabapples and rust disease on hawthorns.
Girdling Roots
A problem from roots growing around the tree trunk which causes vascular tissue disruption. Cutting edge technology is used to excavate the soil from trunk base and roots without damaging them. Once exposed, the roots are inspected and problems corrected if possible.
Inspect and Treat Applications
These are a series of inspections from May through September. A certified arborist will inspect the landscape for insect problems and treat as needed. Recommendations may also be made to help the growth, vigor or aesthetics of the plants in the landscape.
Scale Insect Applications
Scale insects are a type of immobile insect that feeds on plants. The timing is based on when that particular scale hatches. The application(s) targets the crawler stages of the scale for the best control.
Spider Mite Applications
Many species of spider mites attack ornamentals & perennials. Proper identification is important in determining control timing, and number of treatments.
Misc. Applications
These are customized applications for problems that might require specialized material or timing.
Pruning
At Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation our goal is the health and safety of your trees. We offer a full range of tree care services to fit the needs of your trees. An International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist will come out and consult with you regarding your trees, and recommend a program that will best suit the needs of the trees on your property.
Tree pruning is one of the most important practices for tree health care. Professional tree care can enhance the natural beauty and health of your trees and shrubs. Although safety is always the primary concern, proper pruning also preserves and improves the health and structure of your trees.
Services offered:
- Safety Pruning
- Is the removal of large dead, diseased, broken, or weakly attached branches to eliminate a hazard.
- Crown Thinning
- Is the process of selectively removing branches to increase light penetration and air movement throughout the tree. Thinning also can reduce the weight of large heavy branches. This also retains the trees natural shape.
- Corrective Pruning
- Is the process of selectively removing crossing or rubbing branches in the tree. This process helps to provide a good branch structure and reduce many problems. This is a good practice for young trees to develop a good structure.
- Crown Restoration
- Is done to improve a tree's branching structure and appearance. It is often done after a storm or after a tree has been pruned incorrectly.
- Cabling and Bracing
- Are methods used to provide support to trees for structural defects, and heavy long limbs. This helps to reinforce the tree so it does not break or split in high winds or storms.
- Tree and Shrub removal
- Stump Removal
- Is the grinding of stumps, below ground level. Individual circumstances, including accessibility and replanting plans, will determine actual grinding depth.
- Lightning Protection System
- Is installed in trees to reduce the damage from a lightning strike.
